Why UTMs matter for a Lovable app

Lovable gives every project built-in analytics: you can see page views, visitors and bounce rate at a glance. What it can't tell you is which ad, post or email actually brought in a signup. When you run a Meta campaign, post on Reddit and send a newsletter in the same week, all of that traffic blends together.

UTM parameters fix that. They are small tags added to the end of a link — like ?utm_source=reddit — that analytics tools such as GA4 read and store with each visit. Tag every link you share outside your app and you can compare channels, campaigns and even individual creatives side by side.

The five parameters

  • utm_source — the site or platform: google, newsletter, reddit.
  • utm_medium — the channel type: cpc, email, paid_social.
  • utm_campaign — the specific push: spring_launch, beta_waitlist.
  • utm_term — optional, usually the paid keyword.
  • utm_content — optional, to tell apart two ads or two links in the same email.

Naming-conventions cheat-sheet

Pick one convention and stick to it. Lowercase with underscores is the safest choice.

Common mistakes

Tagging internal links

Never add UTMs to links between pages of your own app. A visitor who clicks a tagged internal link starts a new session with the new source, wiping out where they really came from.

Inconsistent casing

Most analytics tools treat Facebook, facebook and FB as three different sources. This builder makes everything lowercase and swaps spaces for underscores so your reports stay tidy.

UTMs in organic bio links

The link in your X or Instagram bio is usually best left untagged, or tagged with a stableutm_medium=social and no campaign. Putting paid-style tags there inflates your ad numbers and muddies what's actually organic.

FAQ

Does Lovable's built-in analytics read UTM parameters?

Lovable's project analytics shows page views, visitors and bounce rate, but it doesn't tell you which ad, post or email led to a signup. To see that, send UTM-tagged traffic to a tool such as GA4 that records the parameters.

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign are the core three, and this tool requires them. utm_term (usually for paid keywords) and utm_content (to compare creatives or link placements) are optional.

Will UTMs break my app's existing URL parameters?

No. This builder keeps any query parameters already in your URL and only adds or replaces the utm_ ones. Hash fragments are kept too.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Recent links exist only while this tab is open and disappear when you refresh.
